To demonstrate the precision of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), Ricardo Kocadag crafted a record of (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction out of the material, and it’s good enough that it works on an ordinary turntable.
Kocadag claims this is the first concrete record, but as Steve Dent of Engadget points out, cruder concrete records were made before. UHPC, meanwhile, is a steel fiber-reinforced cement composite used in skyscrapers and large bridges that require a material with high load-bearing properties. The sound quality is pretty good as you can see in this video from German radio station BLN.FM
UCLA researchers have published a paper in Nature outlining a new material, one that’s got the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any material ever created. The compound comes from alloying magnesium with silicon carbide nanofibers, strengthening the light-weight pliable metal into a rigid, strong material.
The team says the material production is scalable, with possible applications in aerospace. By turning the normally malleable metal into a material lighter than titanium or other lightweight metals while also matching the strength needed to compete. It can also withstand high temperatures, another factor that could make it a new rocket body material of choice.
Downloadable, printable clothing may be coming to a closet near you. What started as designer Danit Peleg’s fashion school project turned into a collection of 3D-printed designs that have the strength and flexibility for everyday wear. “Fashion is a very physical thing,” she says. “I wonder what our world will look like when our clothes will be digital.”
Do you want to live healthy, and have joy in life? Do you want to be an entrepreneur, and figure out how you can make a difference? This is not about the good and the bad, this is about how you can do it better.
Being a foodie, my breakfast preparation tends to be extremely elaborate. A lot of what I cook depends on what I feel like eating that morning. Most of these dishes have ingredients which would not feature on a monthly grocery list: penne pasta, sriracha sauce and black olives, for example. Now I could wake up in the morning, shop for the ingredients online and wait a couple of hours for delivery, or simply pick them up while I’m on my morning jog. But does this mean I’ll prefer to stand in long queues in the grocery shop all the time? I suppose not! This is precisely why multiple retail formats not only co-exist but are all growing as well. Each of them address a different need.
